FIGGYR / FIELD NOTES

How it works

Internet plans usually quote bits per second; files are usually measured in bytes. A capital B means bytes, while a lowercase b means bits. GiB and MiB use powers of 1024. The default 85% is an editable planning assumption, not a measured connection speed.

The formulaSeconds = file size in bits ÷ (bits per second × usable speed ÷ 100)
1 byte = 8 bits · 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes

Put it into practice

EXAMPLE 01

A 1 GB file at 100 Mbps and 100% usable speed takes 80 seconds. At 85%, the estimate is about 95 seconds.

EXAMPLE 02

A 1 GB file at 10 MB/s and 100% usable speed takes 100 seconds.

Good to know

Why does my actual download take longer?

Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, shared bandwidth, server limits and connection setup can reduce throughput. Use a sustained observed speed for a better estimate.

Does this work for uploads?

Yes. Enter your upload speed, which can be much lower than download speed.
