How it works

The comparison uses the active rectangular display area, excluding bezels, stands and mounting hardware. It does not calculate viewing distance, pixel density or image quality. Curved and non-rectangular displays may need manufacturer dimensions for installation. Aspect ratios are entered as width to height, such as 16:9, 21:9 or 4:3.

The formulaWidth = diagonal × aspect width / √(aspect width² + aspect height²)
Height = diagonal × aspect height / √(aspect width² + aspect height²)
Visible area = width × height

Put it into practice

EXAMPLE

Two 16:9 screens with diagonals of 27 and 32 inches have an area ratio of (32 / 27)², so the 32-inch screen has about 40.47% more visible area.

Good to know

Will it fit on my desk or wall?

Compare actual outside dimensions, stand footprint and mounting requirements separately.

Does a wider aspect ratio give more area?

Not necessarily at the same diagonal. The width/height balance changes; the tool shows the resulting dimensions and area.
