How it works

Use the actual empty spool weight and your filament manufacturer’s density. Presets are editable rough starting points, not product specifications. Length assumes a uniform circular filament of the entered diameter. Print mass should include slicer supports, brim and purge material when known. Extra percentage adds a separate reserve. Cost includes filament only, in the currency you use for the entered price; it excludes electricity, labor, machine wear and failed prints.

The formulaRemaining mass = loaded spool − empty spool
Length = mass ÷ density ÷ filament cross-section
Needed = slicer mass × (1 + extra % / 100)
Material cost = needed grams / 1,000 × price per kg

Put it into practice

EXAMPLE

A 650 g loaded spool with a 200 g empty spool has 450 g of filament remaining.

EXAMPLE

A 100 g sliced print plus 10% extra needs 110 g and costs 2.20 at a price of 20 per kg.

Good to know

How do I find the empty spool weight?

Weigh an identical empty spool or use reliable information for that exact spool. Cardboard, plastic, refills and spool sizes differ. The 200 g starting value is only an assumption.

Does enough calculated material guarantee a complete print?

No. Scale error, diameter variation, moisture, purge and slicer estimates affect actual usage. Keep a suitable reserve and follow your printer’s guidance.
