How it works

Dimensions describe a uniform loose-material layer. Rectangular area is length × width; circular area is π × radius². Density is never assumed: moisture, material and compaction affect it. Enter your supplier’s loose bulk density if you want a weight estimate. Bag count uses the volume printed on the bag, not its weight. Allowance does not predict compaction or settlement.

The formulaVolume = area × depth × area quantity
Adjusted volume = volume × (1 + allowance / 100)
Bags = round up(adjusted volume / bag volume)
Weight = adjusted volume × entered density

Put it into practice

EXAMPLE

One 3 × 2 m bed at 10 cm depth needs 0.6 m³. With 10% extra, plan 0.66 m³ or 17 bags of 40 L.

Good to know

Is a cubic yard a ton?

No. A cubic yard measures volume; mass depends on density. Ask the supplier for the material-specific density and sold quantity.

Can I combine different beds?

Calculate each bed separately or use the quantity field for identical areas.
